Rail operator London Midland is cutting down on packaging at depots as part of a drive to reduce waste across its network.
London Midland has announced a deal with RJN Chemicals to use FreshClean, an environmentally-friendly cleaning product at its Tyseley and Soho depots.
Because FreshClean is a concentrated powder there is a drastic reduction in the amount of packaging used.
London Midland commercial director Alex Hynes said: “London Midland is working hard to reduce the amount of waste produced on its network and has recently set up newspaper recycling points with Metro.
“We have ambitious targets to reach and a key factor in choosing FreshClean, as well as its performance, was the reduction in packaging."
London Midland has recently installed newspaper recycling points at Snow Hill station in Birmingham.
The schemes are part of London Midland's bid to recycle 50 per cent of its waste.
Recycling facilities have also been installed for on-train cleaners in Shirley and Northfield where trials have proved successful.
Two skips of paper have been recycled at Northfield and Shirley each week, allowing normal waste collections to be reduced by around 40 per cent.
