Hereford

Hop on board a train with London Midland to Hereford - an ancient city on the banks of the River Wye, Hereford is the commercial and artistic heart of the county. It is a harmonious city and one that has successfully incorporated its rich heritage into the bustle of day-to-day life. Don’t be surprised to find historic buildings housing modern shops and modern buildings holding historic treasures.

Historic

Hereford was the Saxon capital of West Mercia. Its Norman cathedral dates from the 12th century and is home to the priceless Mappa Mundi, a 13th-century cartographer’s interpretation of the world. The city was once home to a castle to rival Windsor. Hereford is supposed to have the oldest inhabited home in England, the Bishops Palace. In the summer of 2009 Hereford's beautiful cathedral took its turn in hosting the annual Three Choirs Festival – Europe's oldest music festival, with musicians from around the world. Look out for the next event in 2012! One of the composers most strongly associated with the festival is Sir Edward Elgar, who composed many of his greatest works while living in Hereford during the early years of the 20th century.
