Lichfield

Travel by train to Lichfield with London Midland. Lichfield lies just north of Birmingham and is surrounded by Staffordshire countryside. Famous for its magnificent, three spired cathedral, the city has a long and rich history. It has been home to some of Britain's best loved and most respected dignitaries, such as the writer Samuel Johnson, the actor and playwright David Garrick and the inventor, scientist (and grandfather of Charles) Erasmus Darwin. Unusual and interesting shopping, plus a wide range of restaurants, with dishes from around the world, help create an experience not to be missed.

Exploring

There are some notable buildings to look out for, like St John's without the Bars, an interesting Tudor building with seven tall brick chimneys in a row, and the Church of St Chad, which is old though well restored. Visit the notably beautiful Cannock Chase, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where you can wander at will round the woodland, coniferous plantations and open heathland. Seek out the visitor centres, museums and waymarked paths, including the Heart of England Way and the Staffordshire Way. Find out more about the notable politicians, industrialists and gentry, the Earls of Lichfield, at Shugborough Hall.
