Travel by train with London Midland to Northampton and arrive just a 5 minute walk from the town centre and famous market place. Northampton is a vibrant, 800 year old county town, nestling in a curve of the river Nene - packed with historical sites, beautiful parks, appealing shopping and no shortage of restuarants, covering cuisines from around the world. In the 12th and 13th centuries Northampton was one of the largest and richest towns in England, with many great churches and religious houses and a university lying within its stone walls. Once famous around the world as England’s ‘shoe town’, it still boasts many high quality shoe shops, and a range of outlet stores, which act as a testimony to this surviving craft and the town’s heritage. The town has been witness to some pivotal historic events; for example, two monuments at the nearby battlefield of Naseby mark one of the turning points in the English Civil War.
