Take the train to Rugby with London Midland. Rugby is most famous as the home of the game of Rugby Football, which reputedly began here in 1823. Rugby School, where the game is said to have originated, is still used for matches to this day. Enthusiasts from all over the world visit the school to see the statue of William Webb Ellis and to read the famous words on the commemoration plaque at Rugby School Close. The town, however, has old origins, with an early Iron Age settlement in the area, and was quiet and tranquil until the 19th century and the coming of the railways and the Industrial Revolution.
