Rugby

Take the train to Rugby with London Midland. Rugby is most famous as the home of the game of Rugby Football, which reputedly began here in 1823. Rugby School, where the game is said to have originated, is still used for matches to this day. Enthusiasts from all over the world visit the school to see the statue of William Webb Ellis and to read the famous words on the commemoration plaque at Rugby School Close. The town, however, has old origins, with an early Iron Age settlement in the area, and was quiet and tranquil until the 19th century and the coming of the railways and the Industrial Revolution.

The game

The invention of the game of Rugby Football is credited to William Webb Ellis, after whom the Rugby World Cup is named (the ‘Webb Ellis Trophy’ or ‘Bill’), who reputedly broke the rules of an Association Football (soccer) match at Rugby School by catching and running with the ball. It has been almost two hundred years since the creation of the game in this way – its success could be due to the fact that, whatever your size, shape, age or gender, there is some form of rugby that is right for you! For more rugby related facts, head to the Webb Ellis Rugby Football Museum, where traditional rugby footballs are still made. Its home is the original building where James Gilbert made the first rugby footballs in 1842.
