London Midland MD says its ‘business as usual’ this Sunday

Date: 17 Apr 2009

London Midland Managing Director Steve Banaghan says it’s ‘business as usual’ this Sunday (April 19) despite the RMT Union's decision to strike for a sixth time.

Some senior conductor members of the RMT Union at depots in Bletchley, Watford and Northampton have decided to strike in a sixth day of action, following earlier strikes on March 13 and 16, April 5 and 6 and April 14.

Mr Banaghan said London Midland expected to run almost all of its usual Sunday services.

“We have consistently met with the RMT Union and worked to find a resolution and even asked them to suspend action this Sunday while we worked on an agreement,” Mr Banaghan said.

“Unfortunately they seem set on this course of disruptive action. The Union is claiming they have ‘rock solid support’ but we are continuing to run the majority of our services. We’re committed to providing the fullest service possible.

“London Midland staff have done a tremendous job on each strike day so far.”

Management staff have operated services, while other London Midland staff have assisted customer services and passengers at stations affected by the action between Northampton and London Euston.

“We have run the fullest service possible on each day thanks to a fantastic effort from our staff. I can promise passengers we will be doing the same on Sunday,” he said.

Mr Banaghan said he was disappointed the RMT Union was repeating claims about safety being jeopardised on services.

“This is simply untrue and another example of scaremongering."

Mr Banaghan said London Midland remained committed to finding a resolution.

“We believed we had reached agreement on previous occasions only for the RMT to decide against. However, we are always open to further discussion.”
