Rail operator London Midland has teamed up with Metro to provide recycling facilities for commuters’ newspapers in Birmingham.
Three newspaper and magazine recycling bins have been installed on the platforms at London Midland’s Snow Hill Station.
The trial scheme is one of the first steps in London Midland’s bid to recycle 50 per cent of its waste and the plan is to roll out the initiative to other London Midland stations across the network.
Recycling facilities have also been installed for on-train cleaners in Shirley and Northfield where trials have proved successful.
Two skips of paper have been recycled at Northfield and Shirley each week, allowing normal waste collections to be reduced by around 40 per cent.
London Midland commercial director Alex Hynes said the trials had been very encouraging.
“We know many of our passengers enjoy reading the Metro and other newspapers and we are keen to provide recycling facilities.
“We want to extend the scheme further and we’re delighted to be working with Metro Newspapers.”
Metro Newspapers has provided funding for the bins and signage, while London Midland will manage and empty the bins and pay for recycling.
