Youngsters Enjoy Transport Theme Day with London Midland

Date: 24 Jul 2009

Twelve youngsters from Wilson Stuart School in Birmingham enjoyed a transport-themed day as guests of rail operator London Midland.

London Midland donated tickets to enable the children, aged between three and six, who have physical disabilities, to travel to Birmingham International Airport with their teachers and teaching assistants.

The group travelled from Wylde Green Station to and from Birmingham International Station on board the company’s services, and rail staff were on hand to ensure their trip went smoothly in terms of getting on and off the trains and through Birmingham New Street Station.

On their trip out, during July, the youngsters had to spot different modes of transport and will be doing follow-up exercises including making models of trains and aircraft.

Youngsters from the school enjoyed another Transport Day with London Midland earlier in the year.

Sharon Hughes, Class One teacher at Wilson Stuart School, who organised the day, thanked London Midland for helping the group.

She said: “The pupils had a great day and really loved the train rides. They found the experience really exciting, and for some it was their first time travelling on a train.

“At each station we were met and given so much help. We had a wonderful day and everything ran like clockwork.”

The links with Wilson Stuart School were forged through London Midland’s Driver Manager Ian Bollands, who accompanied them on the Transport Day, along with his wife Julie, who works at Wilson Stuart and is a member of the school charity committee.

Ian said: “We were pleased to help out. We’ve been helping Wilson Stuart in a number of ways for a few years and it was great that the transport day was such a success, and the children were able to get so much value out of their experience.”
