London Midland’s St Albans Abbey station has been presented with a security award after an assessment by the British Transport Police.
The station, which received a £225,000 makeover earlier this year, was assessed for station and passenger security.
London Midland commercial director Alex Hynes said: “We realise how important security and a pleasant environment are to passengers, so this award is recognition of the progress being made by London Midland and our partners. It’s great news for passengers.”
Stuart Pile, Hertfordshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transport and Chair of the Abbey Line Community Rail Partnership, said: “I’m very pleased to hear this news. Recognition of the improved security at the station is another feature that will hopefully encourage more people to use the Abbey Line.
“As well as the work carried out by London Midland and your local county council, thanks must also go to the other members of the Community Rail Partnership, especially the volunteers who dedicate so much time to improving and promoting the Abbey Line service.”
London Midland and Hertfordshire County Council joined forces with volunteers to give St Albans Abbey station a £225,000 makeover earlier this year.
The improvements to the station included the installation of CCTV, planters, modern lighting, a ticket vending machine, new information display cases and signage, a new waiting shelter, more bicycle storage and new seating on the platform. Children from nearby St Peter’s School also created mosaics to decorate the station.
A platform hump has also been installed at the station to improve access and a real-time visual information display and phone help point are to be installed.
