London Midland manager swaps tracks for towpaths and raises £1,250 for charity

Date: 21 Jan 2010

London Midland manager Andy John raised £1,250 for charities when he swapped tracks for towpaths in a cycle ride along the Grand Union Canal.

Control Fleet Manager Andy, who works in London Midland’s control room at the Mailbox, set off from Regent’s Park in London and cycled the 160-mile route along the Grand Union Canal to Birmingham city centre.

Andy was accompanied by his friend Ian Charlesworth for the September event.

The endurance feat was all the more impressive as Andy injured his back two days before setting off and the duo had to repair numerous punctures because of hawthorn hedge cutting along the route.

The pair raised £750 for the Pancreatic Cancer Fund and £500 for the Perry Tree Centre for older people in Kingstanding.

Andy decided to raise funds after losing his father Richard to pancreatic cancer. Richard worked as a train manager for Cross Country trains in Birmingham.

“It’s a cause that often gets forgotten about as people tend to donate to Cancer Research which incorporates all forms of the disease,” Andy said.

“I’d like to thank everyone who supported us and hope we’ve been able to raise awareness of these good causes.”
