London Midland on track to bring art to millions of rail users across the West Midlands

Date: 11 Jun 2010

Millions of rail users across the West Midlands have the opportunity to feast their eyes on a new collection of posters, as London Midland unveiled art work by local students at its Birmingham Snow Hill train station.

The posters have been created by talented students at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design (BIAD), part of Birmingham City University. The collaborative project between the rail operator and the University is entitled ‘Made in the Midlands, and celebrates the diversity of talent that makes the region a leader in the creative industries.

Representatives from London Midland, along with Birmingham City University students who designed the posters, revealed the full collection of 15 designs to the public at the city centre station.

The students’ stunning art work ranges from photography, graphics and textiles paintings to illustrations. Different posters from the collection will be displayed in various stations across the West Midlands.

London Midland commercial director, Alex Hynes, said: “I’m sure rail users throughout the region will enjoy and appreciate the creativity and diversity of this collection. The Made in the Midlands project was devised to find new ways of bringing art to rail stations, and to encourage local students to showcase their work to a wide audience.

“This type of project is ideal for passengers who rarely visit galleries or exhibitions, as it gives people the chance to view an eclectic range of art in non traditional areas such as platforms and booking halls. We are proud to display these posters across our network throughout the West Midlands.”

Birmingham City University BIAD Associate Dean, Paul Glennon, said: “This showcase of creative talent is very exciting, not only for our students, but for the travelling public too. We are delighted that London Midland supports this project and shares our pride in the diverse creativity that comes from this region.”
