Student’s model station raises the platform in design at Worcester

Date: 14 Jun 2010

A model makeover of London Midland’s main Worcester train station has been created by a local college student in an effort to show how a traditional rail station could look with a new modern redesign.

The contemporary miniature version of Worcester Foregate Street station has been on display in the station’s information office, and is being exhibited to gather feedback from commuters on the design by its 19-year-old creator.

The model is a student project by Matthew Haim from Warndon in Worcester, who built it as part of a brief for the final project of his art and design course.

Local student, Matthew Haim, said: “The brief to redesign the train station was completely my idea. I chose it because I use the station regularly and always wondered how it could look from an artistic point of view, with a very modern minimalist design.

“Before I created the model I made drawings and visited the station. The staff have been really helpful and gave me a tour which helped me to visualise what I wanted to do. I’ve had really good feedback from commuters. Their comments have helped me to look at areas of my work that I wouldn’t have considered before, which will help towards my assignment and hopefully lead to a good mark.”

Matthew was based at the station for three days this week to gather commuters’ comments.

London Midland customer service manager, Peter Dobbin, said: “This project has been a real eye-opener for us, it’s not the usual request we receive, but has been interesting to find out how a regular rail user would put their stamp on our station if they had a blank canvas.

“Matthew’s work has generated a lot of interest, with many rail users responding to his work. It’s good to know there’s a new generation interested in the railways, whether that be station design or how train services are run.”

Matthew will submit his project - Redevelopment of Worcester Foregate Street Station - on Monday June 14. The assignment is part of an art and design diploma, a one year course run by Worcester College of Technology.
