Interview tips

Interviews can be an unnerving time. The following tips may help you to prepare:

  • dress smartly - interviews are formal and you should present yourself in a formal way
  • plan your route in advance - you don’t want to get lost and panic before your interview
  • arrive at least 10 minutes early - arriving promptly allows you time to compose yourself before your interview and makes a good impression
  • be prepared - you can research example interview questions online, however try to think of real work life examples that you can draw upon in your interview
  • ask questions - most interviewers will give you an opportunity to ask questions at the end, try to have a least 1 constructive question prepared
  • body language - your body language is important during an interview, try to remain sitting upright, without slouching and try not to figit
  • eye contact - make sure you keep a good level of eye contact with all interviewers
  • relax - easier said than done, but try to relax during your interview
  • take your time - don't rush when answering questions. ensure that you have answered them fully

Do London Midland provide training?

Your first 3 days on joining the business will be at our company induction. This will take place at our Training Academy in Birmingham city centre. Dependant on your role, you may be required to undertake further training. For example safety critical will need PTS (personal track safety) training and other training we provide will be for roles such as; Platform Assistant, Customer Service Assistant, Conductor and Train Driver.

Do London Midland take work experience placements?

At the moment we do not offer work experience placements. It is something that will be reviewed in the future but is not available at present.

How do I apply for a Qualified Driver role?

We do not advertise for qualified drivers, however if you are a Qualified Train Driver and wish to join London Midland we would certainly like to hear from you. Simply contact the recruitment team or email your CV to recruitment@londonmidland.com

How do I apply for a trainee driver role?

Our trainee train driver role attracts hundreds of applications per advert. For that reason, trainee driver roles tend to be advertised only once every 6-12 months. We sift through all applications that are received for each advert.

I am disabled and require support for interview/assessment

I am on a driver or conductor pipeline but have seen a new advert for the role?

Our pipelines (talent pools) are always being updated. We have many people at different stages of the process including those who are ready to offer. For this reason we may need to advertise again to ensure, we have enough people starting the recruitment process to replace those that are being completed. Your place on the pipeline will not change.   

I have been locked out of my careers account, what should I do?

Please contact the recruitment team at recruitment@londonmidland.com and they will reset your password.

I have completed Conductor/Driver testing before, will I need to resit them?

The short answer is no, if you have passed your psychometric testing and it is still valid we will use those scores. Conductor testing is valid for 3 years and driver testing is valid for 5 years with London Midland. Other train operating companies may differ.

I missed the deadline to submit my application form, what can I do?

Unfortunately, once a deadline has passed we can no longer accept further applications. Please visit the current vacancies page regularly as similar roles may be advertised in the near future.

I would like to join London Midland as an apprentice, how do I do that?

We are pleased that you have chosen London Midland for your future career. We work in partnership with Birmingham Metropolitan College, therfore all of our apprenticeship placements will be advertised on their website. I've been offered a post by London Midland, what checks will they complete on me?

All successful applicants will undergo what Basic Disclosure covers (criminal records check), right to work in the UK, references (your last/current employer will be required) and medical clearance. If you role is safety critical, you will undergo a full medical assessment including a drug and alcohol screen. For non safety critical roles you will be asked to complete an online medical questionnaire.

Who do I contact regards queries on recruitment?
