Pick up an Oyster 'pay as you go' (PAYG ) from Oyster ticket shops, some National Rail stations, London Overground ticket offices, Tube station ticket machines, online at tfl.gov.uk/oyster or by phoning 0845 330 9876.

  • London Midland ticket offices & self-service ticket machines at London Euston and Watford Junction stations
  • tfl.gov.uk/oyster
  • selected National Rail stations where Oyster PAYG is accepted for travel
  • most tube and London Overground stations’ ticket offices & touch screen ticket machines
  • Over 2,200 Oyster ticket shops across London, find your nearest one at tfl.gov.uk/fares

Using your Oyster Card at stations

  • touch-in by placing card flat on the yellow Oyster scanners  at the start of your journey and touch-out at your final destination
  • yellow scanners have visual and audible signals to let you know to pass through. New readers display the cost of your journey and the remaining balance
  • an £8.80 charge is applied when you touch-in and adjusted according to the journey distance when you touch-out.  Always remember to touch-out, else you’ll be charged more than the Oyster single fare being advertised for that journey
  • a daily price capping promise is applied so you get the best value ticket for your journey; get unlimited travel (from 0430 and before 0430 the next day) and pay no more than an equivalent Day Travelcard when you use Oyster PAYG on bus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground and some National Rail services
  • failing to touch-in/out could make you liable to a Penalty Fare or prosecution
  • in stations without yellow Oyster scanners please use the validators provided to avoid being charged the maximum fare
 

Oyster discounts for Railcard holders

Get your railcard discount loaded onto you Oyster, use it to PAYG at an adult rate and your Off-Peak Oyster daily price cap discount will be up to 34% cheaper than the equivalent adult rate cap. This applies to Disabled Persons Railcard, Senior Railcard, HM Forces Railcard and 16-25 Railcard.

Services accepting Oyster 'pay as you go'

  • all London Midland services between London Euston and Watford Junction
  • Southern services between Watford Junction and Clapham Junction
  • Transport for London (including bus, Tube, tram, Docklands Light Railway) and all London Overground services
  • most National Rail services within the London Travelcard area except Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect Services between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow and Southeastern high speed services between St Pancras International and Stratford International.

Oyster PAYG is not available on London Midland services North of Watford Junction.

Contactless payment card

Using a contactless payment card to pay for travel is a quick, easy and secure method for purchases under £30. Just like the Oyster, you touch-in and out on the barriers.

  • contactless debit, credit, charge or pre-paid  cards can be used for PAYG travel within the London travel Card area, including London Midland services between London Euston an Watford Junction.
  • PAYG travel is not available for use on London Midland services north of Watford junction or on the St. Albans Abbey line. You will need a paper ticket for these journeys.
  • you pay an adult rate pay as you go fare and could also benefit from daily and Monday to Sunday capping.
  • a great alternative to the 7 Day Travelcard. Use the same card to pay for all your journeys all week until Sunday and your fares will be capped at the price of an equivalent 7 Day Travelcard
  • discounted travel is not available on Contactless PAYG – use your Oyster card or Oyster photocard for this.
