Liverpool Lime Street improvement works

30 September until 22 October 2017

What is happening?

Improvement works will be taking place at Liverpool Lime Street from 30 September until 22 October 2017.

Signalling and platform work will be taking place, including the construction of a new platform and the extension of two existing platforms.

Once complete, these works will increase the capacity at Liverpool Lime Street, enabling improved performance and better connections to other rail services.

More information about the project can be found at

Changing at Liverpool South Parkway

During this time, London Midland trains will only be able to run as far as Liverpool South Parkway.  If you are travelling in or out of Liverpool city centre, use Merseyrail services to and from Liverpool South Parkway.

This will add some time to your journey, so plan in advance at

London Midland services from Birmingham and Crewe will arrive on platform 2.

Merseyrail services to and from central Liverpool will start and terminate on platform 5.

London Midland services to Birmingham and Crewe will depart from platform 3.

Which station to use

Moorfields station is in the heart of the commercial district and within walking distance of many popular attractions. It's just a 16 train journey from Liverpool South Parkway and offers the easiest and most accessible connection to and from the city centre.

Liverpool Central

Liverpool Central is the closest station to Liverpool ONE and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, but is less accessible than Moorfields. Change here for services to James Street.

James Street

For James Street station you will need to change onto an additional Merseyrail service, so consider this when planning your journey.

  • Change at Liverpool Central when travelling into the city
  • Change at Moorfields when travelling out of the city towards Liverpool South Parkway

Although this is the closest station for walking to many of the city's attractions, James St station is expected to be very busy during these works. Consider a slightly longer walk and easier train journey by travelling directly to and from Moorfields instead.
